PennyworthI just completed an article regarding the end of Gotham on the Fox Network. You can read that HERE.  As I said there, it is a bittersweet moment for fans of the show. It was renewed but it is the last renewal the series will land.  But Gotham’s showrunner Bruno Heller is not done with the property.  I can now tell you that Heller will be show-running a new Batman-based show on the EPIX channel. The new show will be called ‘Pennyworth’. Pennyworth will, of course, center around famed butler, friend and guardian of the Wayne Estate and Bruce Wayne himself Alfred Pennyworth.

The EPIX channel is owned by MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). They have (at this point) ordered ten episodes for a first season and it is a straight-to-series order

Pennyworth‘ is not directly a spinoff of Gotham however it will explore the history of Alfred as mentioned on the show. That is, his time as a British SAS operative during the Cold War. On Gotham, Alfred once told Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne about the time when he first met Thomas Wayne and how the businessman helped saved him from his downward spiral of misery and despair. This will undoubtedly be depicted in ‘Pennyworth‘. as well.

Michael Wright, EPIX President commented;

“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series,”

Bruno Heller also commented;

“Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate,”

According to THR, casting has now begun for the show but Sean Pertwee (the actor who portrayed Alfred Pennyworth on Fox’s ‘Gotham‘) will reportedly not be involved.
