The Rock Confirms DC Comics Role

Black Adam

The rumors surrounding the upcoming Shazam film from DC have been swirling for a while now. Many of those rumors have surrounded Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who has teased his role consistently across social media platforms for weeks. Rumors no more, we now know that Rock will be playing villain Black Adam.

There has been speculation as to which character Rock would portray. Some have put him in the Shazam role. Ultimately, the role of Black Adam was decided on and announced earlier today.

The studio has not revealed any other details about the film. It may be important to note that Black Adam is not always on the wrong side of justice and has often served as an anti-hero in comics. The inclusion of Rock in the film does not truly reveal if the character will assume a protagonist role.

Black Adam originally appeared in DC Comics when Shazam was still known as Captain Marvel. He was brought back into storylines in the late 1970’s and became a recurring character. Once the new century dawned, Black Adam was given a bit of a makeover. He was reimagined by DC writers Jerry Ordway, David Goyer and Geoff Johns as a character looking to clear his name.

Black Adam possesses numerous super abilities based around his use of magic. He can fly, has super strength, super agility and can manipulate lightning.

It was social media that brought the news when Rock delivered this tweet:

Interesting enough, Rock uses the hashtag #TheAntiHero, which may give just a slight bit of insight into which version of Black Adam we may see on screen. It would be surprising if the details are ironed out to that level at this point, but it is worth noting.
