Black Panther has long been rumored to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the near future. Rumors can come from many sources but look no further than the creator of Black Panther, Stan Lee, to confirm the rumor is true.
Stan Lee was being featured on the “Marvel Presents: The Legendary Stan Lee” panel in Canada recently. During that appearance, Lee shared his thoughts on the MCU and the immediate future. He spoke about the future of Black Widow. He shared his thoughts on the next wave of movies and their featured characters Ant-Man and Doctor Strange. It was when he was discussing that next wave that he dropped the confirmation fans have been waiting for, according to MTV.com:
The chances are she (Black Widow) will have her own movie because eventually all the superheroes are going to have their own movies. They are already working on Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and the Black Panther, and there are others I am not allowed to talk about.
Wrapped up in all the other information is the revelation that the long rumored Black Panther movie is already being worked on. T’Challa is coming to the big screen.
Comic fans may rejoice as one of the true leaders in Marvel’s arsenal will arrive in his own film. However, as excited as most are about the confirmation, the character once again shines a light on the split licensing that Marvel Studios has to deal with.
For those not familiar, at the core of Black Panther, especially when talking about Black Panther in recent memory, is his personal relationship with Storm. The highly relied upon warrior of X-Men fame, Storm married Black Panther and their union played a key role in Marvel’s massive Civil War event.
Alas, Storm is under the copyright of Sony at the current time, isolating her from joining her husband either in flashbacks to their childhood relationship or in the current story lines. As Marvel continues to build the Cinematic Universe, it is easy to see the culmination being a big screen adaptation of Civil War. For that to happen, it is essential to bring all of Marvel’s properties back under one roof.
Until then, let us rejoice in the pending arrival of Black Panther to the MCU.
