BOOM! Studios is a unique publishing house specializing in high-profile projects across a wide variety of different genres from some of the industry’s biggest talents, including Philip K. Dick‘s DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?, The Henson Company’s FARSCAPE, and the original Mark Waid series IRREDEEMABLE. BOOM! recently launched its youth imprint, BOOM Kids!, with Pixar’s THE INCREDIBLES, CARS, and TOY STORY, as well as Disney‘s THE MUPPETS, DONALD DUCK, UNCLE SCROOGE and WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES. This year, BOOM! Studios celebrates its fifth anniversary.
Boom! Studios could be one of the biggest independent comic book companies that you don’t pay attention to. This will wind up being a very terrible mistake for you as a reader. Founded in 2005 by Ross Richie and Andrew Cosby, Boom! Studios was named Wizard magazines best new publisher a mere 4 months from their inception into the comic industry. In 2007 they named legendary scribe Mark Waid as their editor and chief and have not looked back since.
They were the first comic book company to offer a digital download of a comic book the day of its release, it sold out and forced them into second printing as well as helping sell other issues of the book. One year later, on January 6, 2009, BOOM! teamed with MySpace.com again to offer a free digital day-and-date release for HEXED along with the “5 for 500” program, sending five copies at no cost to the top 500 retailers in the Direct Market.
Along with signing a deal with Disney/Pixar to do comic books based on their properties (issue number 1 of Darkwing Duck comes out on June 15th 2010) they have two of the most popular books out there right now with “Irredeemable” and “Incoruptible” written by Mark Waid. The deal with Disney/Pixar and the books by Mark Waid have shown the versatility of Boom! Studios. They not only put out teen and adult oriented themed books, but also have lines specifically created for younger audiences.
Boom! writes amazing books, actively promote themselves at conventions, book fairs, and this year very prominently at different stores for Free Comic Book Day. Mark Waid was there signing special Free Comic Book Day issues of “Irredeemable” number 1.
Whether you have heard of Boom! Studios and merely looked over their material, or if you have not heard of them, I highly recommend picking up their books. The stories are amazing, the art is outstanding, and throughout the entirety of any of their numerous series you will not be disappointed.
