Comic Deep Dive: Marvel’s Mangaverse

Hey, folks!  Welcome back to Comic Deep Dive!  During these COVID-related dark times, I’ve taken the opportunity to do some strange and exciting comic book reading to fill the void caused by constant cancellation.  Today, I’m talking all about Marvel’s Mangaverse imprint!  Here’s the run-down:

The Story

  • X-Men, Hulk, and Spider-Man (Spider-Man J) manga was popular overseas
  • So Ninja High School creator Ben Dunn developed a manga-inspired Marvel Universe
  • Ran (off and on) from 2000 to 2002 and again in 2005 to 2006

The Titles

  • Fantastic Four (one-shot)
  • Ghost Riders (one-shot)
  • Marvel Mangaverse, New Mangaverse
  • Punisher (one-shot)
  • Spider-Man (one-shot), Spider-Man: Legend of the Spider Clan
  • X-Men (one-shot), X-Men: Ronin, X-Men: Phoenix

The Events

  • None, which was a missed opportunity

The Crossovers

  • None, which was again a total missed opportunity

The Good Stuff

  • Ben Dunn oversaw all of it
  • Gender-swapped characters like Toni Stark
  • Captain America is the President
  • Tons of anime/manga influences throughout
  • Quite affordable to get the whole line

The Bad Parts

  • Super short-lived
  • Mostly out of print and forgotten
  • No big crossovers

The Creators of Note

  • Ben Dunn
  • Skottie Young
  • Kaare Andrews
  • Peter David

Characters Off the Page

  • No merchandising to my knowledge

The Returns

  • Sadly none… yet

Overall Thoughts

  • This deep dive is something I have recently wanted to do after discovering Ninja High School
  • Way too short for its own good, but I loved reading it all in an afternoon
  • I’ll keep the whole thing
  • My final grade: B+

See you next month for another comic deep dive! In the meantime, share your thoughts on Marvel’s Mangaverse imprint with us on social media. We’d love to hear from you.
