DC has just announced that the final two issues of both Jody Houser’s Supergirl and Gene Luen Yang’s runs on Supergirl and The Terrifics respectively will receive endings, but not in print. Next week will be the last print issue of The Terrifics and Supergirl’s March release is now being retroactively listed as its final print issue. The Terrifics #s 28-30 will be released digitally in July, August, and September and Supergirl #s 41 and 42 will be released digitally in May and June.
But collectors or readers who refuse to live the digital-only life are in luck… sort of. The titles will be released in print in the form of the final trade paperback collections. This is a move similar to the long-forgotten Vigilante miniseries during the New 52 era, another similarly low-selling title.
It is unclear whether this plan is being carried out as an experiment or if it is a sign of more things to come. Though it is clear that the industry will look a little different in a post-COVID world, this is certainly not the answer. Hopefully this misstep will be acknowledged and rectified by those in charge at the DC offices.
