For this latest volume of Deadpool, launched in November of 2015, Scott Koblish has drawn a series of variant covers. The series, dubbed the “Secret Comic Variants”, tells a story via the cover art and spans the first twenty issues. A new story begins on the variant cover for issue # 23. This comic book issue has been more than a year in the making.
You’ve seen them on the shelves each month, but have you ever wondered what the story is? Me too. I was looking at books to be released next week and noticed Deadpool will be hitting it’s 25th issue (rather impressive by today’s standards) and I noticed the Koblish “Secret Comic” cover still going strong. It got me to wonder “Just what is that story?” And so I looked, and they haven’t been put together before … until now.
At the time of announcement, Jordan White spoke with CBR and said; “This all started when we were talking about a round of the themed variant cover programs we tend to do. We were discussing a new one, and I noticed that we tend to do 20 covers across the line… and it occurred to me, why not have those 20 covers make up a comic? It was one of the craziest ideas I’d ever had for Deadpool… but I immediately fell in love with it. It’s nutty, it’s meta, it’s a little evil… I knew I was going to have to make it happen”
It is unconfirmed at this point if Marvel Comics will gather these variant covers in to a collected edition or separate issue.
This seems to be when the first “issue” of this Secret Comic ends, and then we have a break as Scott Koblish draws other variant covers for Deadpool volume 4. Then a new comic issue begins with this issue, issue # 23. This covers issue 23, 24, and issue 25 which will be on shelves January 25th 2017:
