Back in May of 2017, we told you about a special Deadpool project that Donald Glover was working on for the FX Network” FXX channel (you can read about that here: https://comicbooked.com/deadpool-animated-series-heading-fxx/).
Unfortunately, FX had decided to pull the plug on the animated ‘Adult-Oriented” show. When it received its initial ten episode ‘straight to series’ order, it was intended to be written, directed and produced by Donald Glover.
“We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.” Jeph Loeb, the Marvel TV lead said at the time.
So what exactly went wrong?
FX released this statement; “Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series,” And continues on to say; “FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”
Wow. “Creative Differences” That is a rather vague and nebulous term that, while it tells us it wasn’t due to funding or scheduling or popularity/relevancy, does not tell us much else. One thing it does mean, however, is that, for the time being at least, this project will sit in limbo. The project was a collaboration between Marvel Studios, Fox Studios and ABC Signature Studios. Since the Marvel and Fox merger deal is still very much in the planning stages and not finalized, the Deadpool TV series will not be able to roll in to the Marvel networks and on-screen Marvel universe just yet. If it does move forward somehow, it would have to be with another of the Fox Network channels and I just don’t see that happening right now.
Perhaps this series will ultimately end up on the upcoming Disney streaming platform some time in 2019. Until now, Deadpool fans, you’ll have to get your fix from the upcoming live-action Deadpool 2 movie.
