Fall Television Preview: The Middle

The Middle

ABC has been the channel to turn to for family style comedies for years. I guess being owned by Disney will do that to you. The Middle returns tonight at 8 pm eastern.

Described around the main character, Frankie Heck, the show is about a family that is middle class in the middle of the country with a mom quickly approaching middle age.

Frankie is played by the always funny Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond fame. She anchors a cast here that is truly under-appreciated. Her on-screen husband, Mike, is played by Neil Flynn. Fans of Scrubs will recognize the former janitor that tortured the hospital staff. Give him time on this show and he will quickly have you recognizing him on Scrubs as the dad from The Middle.

The Heck family children, Axl, Brick and Sue, are played by Charlie McDermott, Atticus Shaffer and Eden Sher. As in most family comedies, the kids have a way of stealing the scenes they find themselves in.

The show does a decent job of balancing the trials and tribulations of being a parent with that of the teenagers of the house as well. Most of all, it’s funny, and there is a decided lack of funny on television lately. The Middle is regarded by many critics as the best show on television that not enough people are watching.

ABC is counting on that changing this season. The show is starting a sixth season and has gained some support recently. It will be trusted to lead the Wednesday night block of comedies of ABC throughout this television season.

Guess we’ll have to tune in tonight at 8 pm eastern on ABC to learn what Sue is so excited about.
