Fall Television Preview: Modern Family

Modern Family

Wednesday nights on ABC is full of comedies. That means Modern Family is back and ready for another run.

Modern Family sets out to depict the roles of modern families in today’s world. Taking a look at both the traditional and non-traditional family units that surround us today.

There’s the traditional family unit, made up of Claire and Phil Dunphy and their three children – Haley, Alex and Luke. There’s a family headed by a gay couple, Mitchell and Cameron, and their adopted daughter, Lily. Then there’s Jay and Gloria Pritchett, a multi-cultural family.

The premise of the show surrounds a Dutch company making a reality television show about these Modern Family units. It allows the characters to “break the 4th wall” and address the audience directly at times. It works, and the show certainly has its funny moments, but the popularity seems to be subsiding a bit in recent seasons.

Nonetheless, the show will debut for a sixth season tonight. Ed O’Neill, who many remember as Al Bundy on Married: With Children, has used the show to reinvent himself a bit and break out of that mold. Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet have both used the vehicle to help propel their careers. The show continues to have a following and a home anchoring the Wednesday night lineup for ABC.

The promo sets the stage with the tagline for the season: “how will they ever top themselves”.

Tune in to ABC on Wednesday nights at 9 pm eastern time to catch Modern Family.
