Total Divas, the “reality” show based on the lives of some of the women associated with World Wrestling Entertainment, returns to television on E! for a third season. The show follows the exploits of Brie and Nikki Bella as well as various other members of the USA Network’s premier wrestling show.
The show has found a massive audience on E! and continues to grow. This season, Rosa Mendes joins the cast of catty female wrestlers.
The show centers around twin sisters Brie and Nikkie Bella and their relationships outside of the ring. While season two spent a fair amount of time focused on Brie’s relationship with wrestler Daniel Bryan and their eventual wedding, this season will shift gears to the underlying relationship of Nikki and WWE poster boy John Cena.
This is not the first time that Cena and Nikki’s relationship has been a focus of the show. Near the end of the first season, it appeared that the two were going to split over differences of their future plans. Nikki wants marriage and kids. Cena is coming out of a marriage and is not anxious to jump back in.
However, during the second season they appeared to reconcile and Cena has even seemed to soften to the idea of marriage. Now, based on trailers for the upcoming season, the couple must figure out where they stand on children and if they can both live with the decision they make together. It is a real look at issues that couples today face and an interesting insight to the people we see on screen beating other people up.
The upcoming season will also take time to focus on some of the other stars of the show. Eva Marie and Summer Rae’s careers continue to grow. The show gives us an interesting opportunity to see the impact that has on someone outside of the ring. It also shows the relationships between established wrestlers like Natalya and the young stars.
Rosa seems to bring a level of sexuality to the show that has been surprisingly missing. Cameron and Naomi continue to be a focus, especially on the heels of Naomi’s husband and his success in the ring.
All in all, Total Divas is ambitious and follows a lot of different stories. It can get confusing to keep track of. The women act in almost stereotypical ways towards each other at times, which can make the “reality” of the show feel forced. Still, it is an look behind the scenes of a world that is typically not big on exposure.
It will be fun to see where this season goes and what it could mean for the future.
