For the second week in a row, Gone Girl won over the hearts and minds of film addicts with $26.8 million, bringing its two week total to just over $78 million. Excellent reviews from critics and a fine dose of word of mouth propelled the Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike thriller to the top spot. David Fincher’s film could easily exceed $100 million and possibly coast towards $125-130 million, via Variety’s report.
Dracula Untold made $23 million for the second spot, bypassing bad reviews for a surprise gold rush at the movies. Robert Downey Jr.’s new drama, The Judge, mysteriously fell flat at the cinema, only pulling in $13.3 million while Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good day grossed $19 million for third place.
All in all, another weekend where a character driven drama stood strong and another one starring a box office goldmine in Downey Jr. fell face first onto the pavement. It proves that word of mouth can tromp a good bout of casting.
This week, Fury with Brad Pitt opens up and tries to fire a grenade or two at Fincher’s hot button thriller.
saw gone girl yesterday. i’m glad that ben affleck made money and is growing in popularity again as an actor, but i honestly wasn’t that impressed. can’t wait to see the judge, though. i feel like that is going to be a lot of people’s “movie of the year,” just going off the previews. who knows.
