Later in 2016, the world will be treated with a movie by DC Entertainment, Warner Brothers and Atlas called Suicide Squad. Written and directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jared Leto as The Joker and also featuring Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Karen Fukuhara and Common, the movie – with its extreme action scenes and its propensity for humor in the face of danger – is projected to be a huge success for Warner Brothers and will hopefully buck the trend that their latest movies have set.
Amidst all of the action and glamour and slickness of the film and amidst the line up of stars, one character and one actor has stood out as a star. Harley Quinn, from the first images and first trailer has stood out as someone who will be the brightest star of the film. It is a fun, sexy, fresh take on the character who has been in the DC Comic universe since the late 1990s where she was initially The Joker’s (or Mr. J for those of you familiar with her already) sidekick. She later went on the break away from a support role to stand on her own and carry her own comic book titles in multiple volumes, specials and one-shot issues.
As confirmation of Harley Quinn’s star power and her importance to the movie, Warner Brothers is also and – may I say – already talking about a solo Harley Quinn movie. In an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter , the studio revealed their interest! The studio has clearly weighed the risk of investing heavily in one character before the ensemble movie has been released. They have also considered what I mentioned earlier, their recent trend in movie reception and success and are confident that a solo Harley Quinn movie would be a hit.
I, for one, would love to see this and would absolutely add it to my list of movies I want to see!
