In September Tom King and Clay Mann will launch a new seven issue miniseries called ‘Heroes In Crisis’. In a D.C. Comics world of Dark Multiverses shattering, Source Walls leaking – Universal Extinction events and Crises that transcend eons, ‘Heroes In Crisis’ will be something rather different. It is a look inwards, a reflect on the impact that those events have on the psyche of meta-humans.
In the D.C. Universe, there exists a crisis center for meta-humans; those heroes who suffer from depression and illness and post-traumatic stress syndrome. It was created by Superman with Kryptonian technology, Wonder Woman with Amazonian mysticism and – of course- Batman’s financial might. It is a safe place where our heroes can recover from both physical and mental/emotional damage. But King and Mann will seek to answer the question ‘What happens when the Sanctuary fails?’.
King is uniquely qualified to answer this question for our heroes. He served as a Counter-terrorism Analyst for the Directorate of Operation’s CTC (Counterterrorism Center), a branch of the Central Intelligence Agency. In fact he spoke of this on a recent appearance on the Seth Meyers Late Night show; “I would always cross as the super nerd comic book writer. I would go on an airplane, I would spill on myself, I would read comic books, I’d have graphic novels with me. I’d basically be me, and they’d be like ‘That guy could not ever be CIA. Let him in, please. No, he could do no damage to anything!’”
Mental Health, PTSD and the impact that war and conflict have on our minds is a very important, socially relevant topic. King commented on just this; “I feel a duty to talk about what violence does to a society through the comics I’m creating.”
