Variety has just reported that Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off not only has a director in Daniel Espinosa, but a star in Academy Award-winner Jared Leto. Leto will play Morbius the Living Vampire. Espinosa is famous for his sci-fi/horror film, Life, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal as well as the action thriller, Safe House, starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington. No word as to whether or not he will keep the trend of Ryan Reynolds co-starring in his films, but he did play a very memorable Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, so this could be a perfect opportunity to revisit and reconnect with the criminally underrated (but now defunct) franchise.
Dr. Michael Morbius is my absolute favorite comic book character of all time. And Jared Leto is one of my favorite current method actors. So it goes without saying that I am very, very optimistic. This might be just what Marvel needs to prove that they are more than Disney allows them to be. I am hoping that this is the bridge between superhero and horror that the genres both desperately need in 2019.
