Marvel has done something awesome that has cranked my interest level all the way to eleven. It isn’t a new title, it isn’t a huge event, it isn’t even taking place on the pages of the comic itself. They are doing two upcoming variant covers inspired by hip-hop duo Run the Jewels. Killer Mike and El-P’s “gun and fist” logo will be featured on Deadpool #45 and Howard the Duck #2.
Both members are avid comic fans. “Comic Books are a part of the Creative world of a kid in and urban environment,” El-P says “I guarantee you like 80 percent of any rappers that you meet probably went through a large comic book phase.”
Killer Mike added “I play with toys, comics, that type of shit, so this is like a very big deal for me.”
Both gave they reaction to Rolling Stone. “We didn’t know it was happening,” El-P says “We just got told it was happening and we were like, ‘You can’t be serious, that’s not possible, how is that even possible?’ Then they showed us the cover. And it’s fucking crazy.”
Killer Mike had a different experience saying ” I knew it was happening potential, but when it came all the way through, I was dancing around the room in my Polo underwear.”
According to Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso the covers were inspired by his son. After his son scored a touchdown Alonso saw him make the gun and fist and his teammates were yelling “Run them jewels fast” a quote from the track “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)” from the album “Run the Jewels 2”.
The Covers for both issues will be available in April.
