Today, on Friday the 13th, Josh Boone and 20th Century Fox Studio’s ‘The New Mutants’ first movie trailer debuted.
As promised, the short trailer features all of the horror and intimacy of a terrorizing, deeply horrific research facility. We get to see Anya-Taylor Joy as Illyana Rasputin aka Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair aka Wolfsbane, Charlie Haton as Sam Guthrie aka Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot and Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar aka Mirage.
Set to premier in movie theaters around the world on April 13th of 2018, the trailer gives us what was promised by 20th Century Fox CEO Stacey Snider when she called it a “haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers”. In fact her full quote reads as such;
“New Mutants is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it’s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like The Shining than ‘we’re teenagers let’s save the world.”
It looks like exactly that. What is noticeably absent however is the overt, obvious presence of superhero mutants. This is clearly not your typical main-line X-Men movie despite being firmly planted in that very same world.
