It’s the third day of October and that means the third movie in my scary Samhain Cinema. Instead of watching something new today, I broke down and watched one of my favorite horror movies of all time; In the Mouth of Madness.
Now, I started out as a huge fan of the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and this modern retelling in the exact style of Mr. Lovecraft’s horror almost feels like it was made just for me. Strange cosmic horror, Stygian monsters, Possession and at the center of it all a Mad Writer with the world in his hands, this masterpiece makes a disjointed and macabre style choice seem as natural as can be. Though the effects are a bit dated, this often works towards the unsettling nature of the film since it was made at a time before the cost effective advent of Computer Generated monsters. There is something oh-so-satisfying about a monster that exists in all three dimensions chasing our protagonist, or menacing him from behind closed doors.
While I don’t wish to give anything away, I will say that it would be foolish to get attached to the world written by the all powerful Sutter Kane!
My rating is a 5 out of 5 on the Samhain Scare-o-meter.
