Sony studios made news the day before San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) opened to the public. The studio was quick to announce a new film while pushing the arrival of the latest installment of a franchise back. Marvel Studios was quick to react by announcing that it would release a film on the date now left vacant by Sony.
Sony was first to the plate with the news that Amazing Spider-Man 3 would be pushed back to sometime in 2018. Sony originally planned to release the next installment of Amazing Spider-Man on June 10, 2016. The fourth installment of the franchise was due to be released on May 4, 2018. That movie no longer has a release date.
The news wasn’t all bad from Sony, however. The studio announced that on November 11, 2016 fans will be given The Sinister Six. Comic fans are well aware of the six pack of villains from the Spiderman universe. That movie, while receiving a fair share of hype, is also drawing early concern around the potential cluster of material. In addition, the thought of a Spider-Man film without the web-slinger in the lead role seems a bit complicated overall. Still, Sony plans to bring an original movie with a new premise to the screen in 2016 and that’s worth getting excited about.
While Sony is away, Marvel will play. Shortly after Sony announced the delay of the Spider-Man projects, Marvel swooped in and announced that it would release a film on May 4, 2018. The studio did not announce what film that would be, though the timeline fits for the next Avengers installment.
It is obvious that the two studios are prime for competition and challenging each other on all fronts. Sony will go to market with a super villain team to challenge Marvel’s Avengers. Meanwhile, Marvel is willing to step into vacated dates by Sony to give the fans something to watch.
The next few years should be very interesting for fans of the two studios.
i really liked amazing spider-man 1 & 2 and feel like they should be done. not everything has to be a trilogy… as proven by the last spidey series. just give up, sony. you did well, just sell the rights back so we can see andrew garfield team up with robert downey jr. (and hopefully hugh jack man if fox can stop being, well, fox). /endrant.
I am still pining for the day when all our favorite heroes can be in a movie together. What will the Infinity Gauntlet be like without X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man?
