Welcome back to Stir the Pot Saturday! Forget the rules? Check them out here and here. And forget the question? Well check that out here.
And remember, stirring the pot is, simply put, an old idiom that means agitating a situation to cause a reaction, trouble, unrest, or even dissent. Kinda like what Loki does. But on the internet. And with less death involved.
Got it? Good. So what are you waiting for? You’ve read my opinions (on Tuesday) and those either sparked you to jump on the bandwagon, form an uneasy alliance with me for the time being, or possibly start planning your own top ten list of reasons why I’m an idiot. Either way, it’s all good.
This week’s question: What were the best comics of 2013?
Go forth. Conquer. And take no prisoners!
Man, it’s a good thing Aaron and I were there for the editor’s choice awards, you woulda picked all DC! Left to my own devices I woulda picked all X-Men, or would I have? The world may never know . . . .
Yeah, at least my favorite full mini got in there. I loved Thanos Rising for the story and the art. It was really cool and a good way to underscore how Thanos became so obsessed with Death. Plus it adds that little tickle at the back of your mind… Is he really insane and just imagining her the whole time?
I’m going to do the best trades I read in 2013:
The Wake Vol. 1
King City
Shazam vol. 1
Swamp Thing Vol. 1-2
TRILLIUM by Jeff Lemire (Verigo). Because no one does what Lemire does.
NOWHERE MEN by Eric Stephenson and Nate Bellegarde (Image). Astonishing, innovative storytelling.
FF by Matt Fraction and Mike Allred (Marvel). Fraction is so good on so many books, but here he and Allred are perfect matches for each other and this material. Perfect.
HELLBOY IN HELL by Mike Mignola (Dark Horse). Simply beautiful.
ALL NEW X-MEN by Bendis (Marvel). Occasionally wobbly, but the central premise of the teen X-Men traveling to the future to find out they basically become assholes continues to pay off in unexpected ways.
Honorable mention: SEX CRIMINALS, SATELLITE SAM, POWERS BUREAU.
Another way of saying ‘Best’ is calling something ‘Superior’ In my opinion Superior titles were all great in 2014. Specifically Superior Spider-Man and Superior Foes Of Spider-Man which were, hands down, the main Marvel books that were on the top of my ‘must read’ stack every month.
Also on the top of that stack are Fables and Fairest. You really can’t really top the quality of Fables, a consistently great series with some of the absolute best covers on any comic series today!
Batman Incorporated and Jupiter’s Legacy were my faves last year.
