Welcome back to Stir the Pot Saturday! Forget the rules? Check them out here and here. And forget the question? Well check that out here.
And remember, stirring the pot is, simply put, an old idiom that means agitating a situation to cause a reaction, trouble, unrest, or even dissent. Kinda like what Loki does. But on the internet. And with less death involved.
Got it? Good. So what are you waiting for? You’ve read my opinions (on Tuesday) and those either sparked you to jump on the bandwagon, form an uneasy alliance with me for the time being, or possibly start planning your own top ten list of reasons why I’m an idiot. Either way, it’s all good.
This week’s question: Who are the best current artists?
Go forth. Conquer. And take no prisoners!
Hmmm… in no particular order…
Fiona Staples
Michael Lark
Sean Phillips
Emma Rios
J.H. Williams III
Esad Ribic
David Aja
Jaime McKelvie
Sara Pichelli
Greg Capullo
I was always going to disagree with you on many of these, though – I think Jim Lee and his imitators (like Finch) are a leftover of the 90s and a minor plague on the industry, but then, I really don’t tend to like “realistic” art, which I tend to find over-posed and lifeless. They’re definitely influential, but I think realism underplays style, and style dictates atmosphere, which means we get a lot of competent books that don’t really craft a lot of emotional response or long-term resonance.
But I admit to having somewhat peculiar opinions, at times.
X-Men Legacy is always a beautiful book, there have been a couple of names on that. I’m a big fan of the Kuberts, Salvador Larroca springs to mind as a name I’m usually happy to see. I like Ed McGuinness. Gerardo Sandoval and Angel Unzueta are probably my favorites.
Frank Quietly is simply the best comic book artist the world has ever known. All others pale into insignificance 🙂
Frank Quiteley by far.
