The Death of a Legend – Farewell to Stan Lee
It’s strange. I don’t get personally saddened by celebrity passings. The loss of life is sad in and of itself, but I’ve never been a person who feels it on an personal level. However, I always knew it would be different with Stan Lee. And today, November 12, 2018 – at age 95 – that day has finally come. A day that I think many of us dreaded…and yet, simultaneously, never believed would come. There was a part of many of us that had almost come to believe that Stan Lee was immortal. And in our memories, he will be.
A World of Characters Brought to Our Lives By One Man
Stan Lee created or co-created over 350 fictional characters. From big names that you’d recognize even if you lived under a rock…Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Hulk, Groot…to names you’d only recognize as a true Marvel fan… Dormammu, Kingpin, Hela…
The list goes on. Characters that have enriched our lives and characters that have made us laugh. Ones who have made us think or made us cry. STAN LEE BROUGHT US THESE and for this we owe him thanks. (For a full list, check out this page.)
Beyond the Characters – He Brought Us A World To Escape To
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and again and again. Comics, Books, Movies…all of it. It’s our place to escape. Our place where good triumphs over evil. It’s our place where we learn again to believe. Stan wasn’t the first to give us this. He will not be the last. But he will be one that lives on in our memories forever as one of the greats.
Stan Lee Brought Us Wisdom
Through his characters and THROUGH HIS CHARACTER, Stan Lee brought a little something extra to the world that cannot be replaced.
AND THEN THERE WERE THE CAMEOS
Do you remember the first time you saw Stan Lee in a cameo?
I do! Kevin Smith’s 1995 – Mallrats. I’m not even sure you’d count this as a cameo or just a part in the movie, but it was legendary. Just like the man himself.
Which goes to show you…23 years before I even knew I liked comics…I knew who Stan Lee was and how important he was. I knew how funny he was. And I never forgot.
As I started to fall in love with the MCU waited to find his cameos. I would watch and watch to make sure I didn’t miss it. And I, and my friends, all knew that the day we went to see a Marvel movie and Stan Lee wasn’t there to make a cameo was going to be one of the saddest days of our lives. And, yet…there was a part of us that never believed it would come.
So, Do you remember the last time you saw Stan Lee in a cameo?
I also immediately know the answer to this. Teen Titans Go! To the Movies! The ONLY DC universe cameo that Stan Lee ever made and he got to do it in his final year on earth. And in true Stan Lee style, “This is a DC movie?! I gotta get outta here!” I laughed so hard I think my daughter was worried for my sanity.
So, I hope you all join me tonight.
Revisit what Stan Lee gave you. Revisit times he made you laugh. Times he made you cry. (Times he made you pretend not to cry because we’re grown ups and no one cries over the fact that Groot just sacrificed his arm for Thor’s ax. ) Revisit the times he made you think.
Remember the times he made you believe.
R.I.P. Stan Lee.
December 28, 1922 – November 12, 2018
