Thor Threads – Then and Now

The Mighty Thor finally gets a feature film all to his own next May. Comic book fans world wide have been checking the blogosphere for new preview pics of the props, sets, and actors costumes. The trailer has shown us the splendor of Asgard, and a very mighty looking Thor, complete with Mjolnir. The entire movie looks visually wonderful. Even the more outrageous aspects, such as Loki’s costume, have been done in a believable manner while still remaining true to the comic book that inspired them.

In the late 80’s this was not always the case.

Adventures in Babysitting
The 1987 feature film was not a Thor movie at all. Although at imdb.com Vincent D’Onofrio(Law & Order: Criminal Intent) is listed as Dawson / ‘Thor’

Mighty Mjolnir is poorly represented here as well

They did get the winged helmet right

The Incredible Hulk Returns
The 1988 made for T.V. movie starred Eric Kramer as Thor. Much less true to the comic book in story and look. This was the first movie featuring Thor.

The shoulders were made from Asgardian Muppet

Odinson and Hulk Earth’s Mightiest Mullet

As uninspiring and even funny looking as the 80’s often were, they did lay some work in getting this character out to the mainstream movie audience. Many movie goers may even have fond memories of these adaptations. It is likely that even if that is the case, the same movie goers will be thankful for the God of Thunder’s new look. Taken very much form the modern comic book Thor costume. Thankfully!  Directed by Kenneth Branagh Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Rene Russo, Clark Gregg, Joshua Dallas, Tadanobu Asano and Joseph Gatt. All of which look great!

I can't wait for the Thor movie which I believe will be a great success.

As an Aussie science fiction writer I’ve been a Marvel Thor fan since the original Journey into Mystery of August 1962.

I liked the Big G coming to eat Asgard. The Revenge of Loki! HA! Good stuff. Although I would have killed Superman in that other story. I always want to kill him. The movie looks great. Even if it's only ok it will still be a big step up for old goldie locks.

don't you just love anthony hopkins. He has this unique talent that no other actor has apart from being a cannibal lol. I heard his new movie Arabian Nights will be a hit in the box office.
