Something (or rather, someone) that’s been a bit lackluster in the New 52: Superman. Remember when the world’s first superhero was the world’s best superhero? I sure do. And don’t get me wrong, the current creators on all of the Superman family books are certainly far from bad. He just seems a bit… out of place. Writers like Greg Pak have started to show that they really “get” the character, but he still seems a little off. So here’s to hoping that we get a return to greatness with the upcoming “Doomed” story arc.
Here are my favorites:
1. Jeph Loeb
2. Alan Moore
3. Geoff Johns
4. Mark Waid
5. Dan Jurgens
6. Karl Kesel
7. Joe Kelly
8. Brian Azzarello
9. Greg Rucka
10. Grant Morrison
Agree? Disagree? Seeing something I’m not in the current Superman books? Sound off in the comments below! Especially if I left off a favorite or included someone who caused you to drop a book.
So, where’s Byrne?
the placing of this list is all wrong
1. Morrison
2. Waid
3. Johns
4. Moore
5. Rucka
6. Azzarello
7-10 interchangeable
I like the list, although “seems a little off” is a wishy-washy criticism that doesn’t actually mean anything. While Pak doesn’t crack my top ten either, he’s not far out, and him/Jae Lee are one of my favorite writer/illustrator combinations. Their characters are believable and have interesting motivations. In fact, they’re so good that the recent crossover story with World’s Finest was incredibly jarring. In between Part 3 and Part 4 of First Contact we see Superman go from a dynamic character that’s tormented by the echoes of erased memories, a true hero who has to take risks and make bold decisions, to a caricature, a plot devise that stands around mumbling about nanites for an entire comic.
