Trailer Tuesday – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

The Hunger Games Mockingjay

Fans of the series of books will tell you that The Hunger Games is an amazingly complicated and ambitious project. The stories center around the games for which they are named. By the time fans arrive at Mockingjay, they find a much larger story that has been present all along.

Throughout the series, fans see the tension building between Katniss Everdeen and President Snow. The civil unrest surrounding the entire nation is teased. By the end of Catching Fire, the situation becomes very apparent. With Mockingjay, author Suzanne Collins takes the series to full fledged war.

The movies have done a decent job of telling the story to this point. Movie goers have been treated to a remarkable visual experience. The story has advanced quite well. Viewers that have not read the books have found the stories to be addictive. The writers have stayed close enough to the source material to keep fans of the books engaged as well.

The next chapter in the films, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, is due in theaters in November. The first official trailer, titled The Mockingjay Lives, has been released. It gives plenty to get excited about.

There is plenty to chew on here. There’s the aforementioned tension at the heart of the matter. There’s Katniss being thrust to the middle of a war she wasn’t aware of. There’s the love triangle, which was put on hold for much of Catching Fire, coming back to the forefront. Katniss continues to protect and care for Peeta while Gale joins the resistance by her side. There’s war, set against that amazing backdrop that has become a large part of the films. Once again, we see all that Katniss holds dear being threatened by her choices.

For movie fans, there’s a little something more. There’s a few glimpses of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He reprises his role as Plutarch Heavensbee. A key role to the films, Heavensbee was the Head Gamemaker that turned our focus from the sadistic games to a quest for independence. Seeing him on film again in unseen footage is indeed bittersweet.
